  • Gallen takes win in front of record Bradenton crowd

    image002-1

BRADENTON, Fla. (April 20, 2013) – It was one of the biggest crowds in Bradenton Motorsports Park history.

And those fans witnessed one heck of a show.

In Nitro Jam’s long-awaited return to Bradenton the stars of Nitro Jam put on an amazing finale Saturday at the Bradenton Nitro Jam presented by CarSafe, Metro PCS and Southern Ford Dealers led by Peter Gallen who won a thrilling finale in AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car.

    Bradenton Nitro Jam

A massive crowd was on hand for the finale of the Bradenton Nitro Jam

After a bit of a wiggle, Gallen found himself just inches from the outside retaining wall as he kept in the throttle and powered to a blistering lap to take the win in the nostalgia Funny Car class, joining fellow pro winners Kyle Wurtzel (Top Fuel), Kyle Hough (Fuel Altered) and Jay Turner (Nitro Harley).

Sportsman winners during Saturday’s Nitro Jam/Summit Pro-Am doubleheader were Mike Thompson (Top Sportsman), Victor Fera (Top Dragster), Mark Nowicki (Super Stock), B.J. Bianchi (Stock), John Biermann (Quick Rod), Dave Marcus Jr. (Super Rod) and Mark Mullen (Hot Rod).

Gallen’s incredible lap was setup after a bit of a lucky break in round one. In the opening tilt opponent Mike McIntire broke on the line, negating a smoking lap by Gallen in the “Poverty Stricken” Monza that could have cost him a shot at the win. But once in the final Gallen more than made up for it, powering to a 5.961 second lap at 245.49 miles per hour – all while hugging the right-side wall after his car sailed out of the groove – to drive around Mike Halstead in the “Candies & Hughes” Barracuda who ran a 6.071, 232.73 in the runner-up effort.

    image004-8

Peter Gallen nearly put it in the wall, but he was able to save it and get the Funny Car win

“I only drive with one hand because I always use my right hand to shift and then go straight to the chute levers. Well, on that lap I had both hands on the wheel cranked as hard as I could to the left and I was not looking at anything but wall for a long time,” Gallen said. “But I wasn’t backing out of this one. I heard for over a year from my 4-year-old that ‘the blue car beat you daddy’ so I had that in my head while the car was getting close to the wall. I just couldn’t take my son torturing me if I got whooped.”

In the consolation pairing Mike Minick drove the “Chi-Town Hustler” to a win over McIntire with the best pass of the weekend, a very quick 5.791, 245.03 mph lap.

In Nitro Jam’s premier nitro-powered class young ace Kyle Wurtzel took both wins over Bruce Litton in Top Fuel as Litton struggled to find grip in both of his passes. Despite those struggles, Wurtzel found little trouble as he powered to laps of 4.958, 267.22 and 5.081, 255.39 to take his first Ironman of the year with the tuning help of veteran tuner Jimmy Walsh.

“We were scrambling a bit at the end to get it all back together after the first run, but it worked out for us,” Wurtzel said. “We brought in a new crew chief to help Mike Wolfarth in Jimmy Walsh and that helped a lot. In the final I jammed that pedal and it drove good so I kept in it and I never saw Bruce so I just hoped for the best. We have been fighting some issues with clutch wear, but we are starting to turn it around and tonight was a good start.”

    Kyle Wurtzel

Kyle Wurtzel took both rounds from Bruce Litton in Top Fuel on Saturday

Nitro Harley saw another incredible pair of passes as Jay Turner and Tracy Kile split the weekend runs, with Turner taking both rounds that mattered. On Saturday Kile once again the winner in round one, but Turner got around his rival in the money round with a 6.385, 228.31 pass to Kile’s 6.510, 213.77.

Turner’s lap of 228.31 mph was seven miles per hour faster than the current IHRA Nitro Harley record.

Finally in Fuel Altered Kyle Hough went two-for-two in the “Super Nanook”, just inching by in round one and then overpowering Ron Hope in “Rat Trap” in the finale with a 6.975, 197.49 to Hope’s 7.481, 217.65.

In sportsman action defending IHRA Top Sportsman World Champion Mike Thompson continued his incredible 2013 season with his third consecutive final on the Summit Pro-Am Tour. Thompson found himself matched up with longtime friend and rival Rick McDonough and got it done on the tree with a .013 reaction time and a 4.706, 148.63 lap on a 4.69 dial in the 1/8 mile showdown.

    image017

Jay Turner’s 228.31 mph lap in Nitro Harley got the crowd on its feet

In Top Dragster Victor Fera won a close one over Jon Siegel, while Super Stock was headed by IHRA veteran Mark Nowicki who took the win over Pat Clifford and in Stock it was B.J. Bianchi taking down Anthony Puleo.

In the Rod categories John Biermann recorded a win over Ron Raymond in the final, Dave Marcus Jr. claimed the Super Rod crown with a win over Jim Walter and Mark Mullen won in Hot Rod over Vinny Laudicina.

Nitro Jam will remain in Florida for round four of its North American tour as the series travels south for the CarSafe Palm Beach Nitro Jam April 27 at Palm Beach International Raceway.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 27, 2013) – When the International Hot Rod Association’s Nitro Jam series made its return to San Antonio Raceway in 2011 the event was deemed an overwhelming success.

The largest crowd in San Antonio Raceway history was on hand for the return of the IHRA’s unique brand of motorsports entertainment as fans in and around the Alamo City embraced the thrills of the world’s fastest machines. Then, in 2012, the event grew even bigger with another capacity crowd on hand for the largest U.S.-based Nitro Jam of the year.

    image008 (3)

San Antonio Raceway will once again host Nitro Jam’s biggest event April 5-6

Now, after two incredibly successful and entertaining seasons, the third annual San Antonio Nitro Jam presented by CarSafe and Good Vibrations Motorsports returns to San Antonio Raceway for what is easily the biggest Nitro Jam of the entire year. The event will feature four nitro classes, including the return of the Kings of the Sport in Top Fuel Dragster, plus nearly half a dozen jets, wheelstanders, fireworks and much more all jammed into one weekend April 5-6 at San Antonio Raceway.

“San Antonio is a great city and I enjoy racing at the track,” said 2007 San Antonio Top Fuel winner Bruce Litton. “This event has grown exponentially over the past few years and I know the IHRA has a great show planned for the fans this season. And speaking of the fans, they are among the best out there and I look forward to spending some time meeting them before putting on a 300 mile-per-hour show for them.”

Among the four nitro classes in action at this year’s San Antonio Nitro Jam are the fastest racecars in the world as Bruce Litton brings his bright orange “Nitro Jam” themed 8,000 horsepower Top Fuel Dragster to the party to take on young sensation Kyle Wurtzel in the “High Yield” machine in a side-by-side 320 mph showdown.

    image009 (3)

Texas will be well represented at the San Antonio Nitro Jam. Pictured is defending race winner John Hale in “Nitro Boss.”

Fans will also enjoy the return of the fastest growing motorsports class in America as the stars of AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car take their 4,000 horsepower nostalgia machines down the Texas quarter-mile at speeds in excess of 250 mph. Among this year’s Funny Car pilots are two-time defending class champion and world record holder Pete Gallen in the brand new “Poverty Stricken” ’78 Monza, Texas-native and last year’s winner John Hale in the “Nitro Boss” Mustang, Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “AllStar” Dodge Challenger and “Mr. Explosive” Mark Sanders.

Rounding out the nitro classes are the out-of-control Fuel Altereds of Kyle Hough in “Nanook” and Ron Hope in “Rat Trap” plus the daredevil’s of the 220 mph Nitro Harley class starring Jay Turner in the record-setting “Big Pig” ride.

In exhibition action fans will be in for a treat as five different jets fill the lines including the battle of jet trains between the “Cannonball Express” and “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”, the incredible “First Strike” and “Top Secret” jet-powered Funny Cars and the 30,000 horsepower Super Shockwave jet-powered truck. Fireworks, the world’s fastest wheelstander and more will bring both nights to a close.

Fans of powerful classic cars will also enjoy watching the world’s fastest sportsman racers take center stage during intermission as the stars of the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour battle for an Ironman trophy in front of an anticipated sellout crowd.

The 2013 San Antonio Nitro Jam presented by CarSafe and Good Vibrations Motorsports is April 5-7 at San Antonio Raceway. Showtime is scheduled for 7 p.m. both evenings with two rounds of Nitro Jam action each night.

  • Hough, Rupert Blast to Victory at Arizona Nitro Jam

    image004

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 23, 2013) – Last year was a bit of an oddball season for IHRA rookie Kyle Hough.

Hough was good alright, visiting seven finals and winning the 2012 Nitro Jam Fuel Altered championship all in his first season behind the wheel. But, despite his championship producing season, Hough didn’t collect one victory. Not one.

    That all changed Saturday night.

    Kyle Hough

Fuel Altered driver Kyle Rough won his first career Nitro Jam Saturday at SIR

With consistency being key to Hough’s championship during his rookie campaign last season, Saturday Hough put it all on the line and let the numbers do the talking as the Las Vegas, Nevada native blasted to his first career Nitro Jam win behind the wheel of the famed “Nanook” machine at the Arizona Nitro Jam presented by CarSafe and Good Vibrations Motorsports at Southwestern International Raceway.

Hough joined AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car champion Jason Rupert, also collecting his first Nitro Jam win, and sportsman winners Vern Bolton (Top Dragster), Howard Gerstel (Top), John Nacis (Mod), Grant Jones (Junior Master) and Samantha Barajas (Junior Beginner).

Hough put together two solid laps on Saturday, blasting past Ron August Jr. in the “Pure Hell” machine in round one and adding another winning pass against the fan-favorite “Arizona Thunder” driven by Mike Hilsabeck. Knowing he had been to this point seven times in 2012 only to come up short, Nanook steered the “Nanook” Fuel Altered right down broadway with a 6.829, 198.52 in the final to collect his first career win over Hilsabeck who ran a 7.081, 160.21. The pair had identical .176 reaction times.

In the Fuel Altered consolation round Ron Maroney in “Blind Faith” drove around August in the “Pure Hell” entry.

    Rupert

Jason Rupert collected the win in AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car when opponent Steven Densham went red

Also picking up his first win on Saturday was California native Jason Rupert in his shiny new “Bays & Rupert” Camaro Funny Car. Rupert, the two-time defending NHRA Heritage Series champion, had the lane all to himself in round one against a broke Mike Halstead and used a red light from Steven Densham in the “Teachers Pet” Camaro to collect his first career Ironman. John Hale in the “Nitro Boss” Mustang won the consolation pairing over Halstead and the “Candies & Hughes” team with the best Funny Car pass of the night, a solid 5.903, 247.02

Saturday’s other big winner was Indianapolis, Indiana native Bruce Litton who drove his Top Fuel machine to two easy wins over Curt Eierdam in the “Invader” jet-powered dragster. While Eierdam closed the night with the fastest speed of the weekend, Litton’s 8,000 horsepower machine was too much off the line and easily coasted across the finish line for two round wins.

In sportsman action Roswell, New Mexico’s Vern Bolton went four big rounds on Saturday to win the Top Dragster shootout, defeating Tucson’s own Tom Koenen in the final with a near-perfect .001 light and a 7.92 on a 7.963 dial at 156.77 miles per hour.

Top winner Howard Gerstel, of Sahuarita, Arizona, drove his unique 1975 Ford Pinto six rounds on Saturday to pick up a win over Luis Martin who broke out, while John Nacis of Huachuca, Arizona won in Mod over Bruce Stone with a 10.80 on an 11.292 dial at 97.76 mph in his ’68 Chevy Camaro.

    Litton

Bruce Litton brought the sold out crowd to its feet Saturday at Southwestern International Raceway

Rounding out Saturday’s big winners were Grant Jones who defeated Gabriel Brown in the Junior 13-17 category and Samantha Barajas who defeated Keeli Tatge in the Junior 8-12 category.

Next up for Nitro Jam is a trip to San Antonio Raceway for the biggest U.S.-based Nitro Jam of the year. Featuring Top Fuel Dragster, AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car, Fuel Altered, Nitro Harley, jet dragsters, jet funny cars, the 30,000 horsepower Super Shockwave jet truck, wheelstanders, fireworks and more, the San Antonio Nitro Jam presented by CarSafe and Good Vibrations Motorsports promises to be a night fans won’t soon forget.

  • IHRA Puts Sportsman Racers in the Spotlight with New Nitro Jam Qualifying Schedule

image003 (1)NORWALK, Ohio (February 27, 2013) – Racers looking for a little more action and a little more time in the spotlight will get their wish at all Nitro Jam/Pro-Am combination events in 2013.

Beginning with the San Antonio Nitro Jam in April the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has announced a new qualifying schedule that will give all participants a round of qualifying on Friday night just prior to the Nitro Jam professional rounds at all Nitro Jam/ Pro-Am events.

The move will place sportsman racers center stage Friday night during the opening round of Nitro Jam and will cut down on Saturday’s schedule to better allow for an earlier finish with all finals scheduled to be run during Saturday’s Nitro Jam finale. Saturday winners will also receive a special-edition Nitro Jam Ironman and increased contingency.

“We are always looking for ways to incorporate our incredibly talented sportsman racers as part of the Nitro Jam show and we felt that this is a perfect way to put our racers in the spotlight while also ensuring that sportsman eliminations don’t run late into the night on Saturday,” said Skooter Peaco, IHRA Vice President. “This will give us an opportunity to showcase our racers Friday night and also allow us to better manage Saturday’s schedule so that the final rounds can be seen by the thousands of Nitro Jam fans.

“After watching entry patterns last year 90 percent of the competitors are already on the property Friday evening anyway so really it is a win-win for everyone.”

Racers will get one round of qualifying on Friday prior to the Nitro Jam professional rounds and one additional round of qualifying Saturday morning at all Nitro Jam/Pro-Am combination events. Eliminations for Saturday’s race will take place throughout the day with the semifinals and finals being included as part of the Nitro Jam show Saturday night.

Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am presented by AMSOIL race will be run as originally scheduled.

The new qualifying schedule will begin at the San Antonio Nitro Jam April 5-7 at San Antonio Raceway and will be in effect at the Bradenton, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Grand Bend, Martin and Memphis Nitro Jam events.

  • Two-time IHRA Funny Car champion Peter Gallen bringing new look, new attitude into 2013

    NitroJam

NORWALK, Ohio (February 26, 2013) – If you have followed just one second of the IHRA Nitro Jam series over the past three years you are almost certain to have heard the name Peter Gallen.

The nostalgia Funny Car driver out of Broomall, Pennsylvania has been to just about every victory lane and set just about every record the IHRA has to offer, but there is still more on Gallen’s to-do list. As hard as it is to believe, even with 17 wins, 27 finals, two IHRA World Records and two AMSOIL Prostalgia Funny Car titles, Gallen isn’t quite done just yet.

“There is still more we want to do,” Gallen said. “We are always pushing our car and our team harder, to be the best, and even with the success we have enjoyed over the last few years we aren’t backing down one bit. There are still mountains out there left to climb.”

    image008

Gallen’s championship winning Monza has received a fresh coat of paint in the offseason

Among Gallen’s “mountains” is a stout lineup of Funny Cars awaiting him on the 2013 IHRA Nitro Jam schedule, a lineup that includes such famous names as “Candies & Hughes”, “Chi-Town Hustler” and “Bullet Bob.” Gallen will also square off with longtime foes Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “AllStar Dodge”, a driver that found Gallen’s number at the end of last season, Mike McIntire in the “McAttack” Camaro and Texas sensation John Hale.

While Gallen’s offseason has been filled with plenty of non-racing activities including hockey practices, cheerleading competitions, honey-do lists – pretty much the kinds of stuff any man with teenage and young children would be dealing with – Gallen admits that he can’t wait to get the season underway.

And that begins with getting the car right for the new season.

“Our major focus during the offseason was to figure out the balance of the chassis. Last season we struggled to keep the front end down and that resulted in most runs being ‘short shifted’ in order to steer,” Gallen said. “To help battle the balance issue we sought advice for our clutch program from Rob and Nicky of Boninfante Friction. After several brainstorming sessions a program was developed and we are excited to see how this program will affect our performance beginning in San Antonio.”

After winning eight times in 2011, Gallen won just twice last season as the team battled a few mechanical issues, issues Gallen believes the team has gotten right with the new clutch program.

    image009

Gallen will be looking for his third straight IHRA Nitro Jam title in 2013

In addition to addressing the issues under the hood, Gallen also gave the “Poverty Stricken” 1977 Monza a fresh coat of paint and a new look for the new season.

“We sent the car to Sano Custom Paint in New Jersey where Alcohol Funny Car owner/driver Dave Sano worked his magic and produced this awesome looking design,” Gallen said. “We also added hand lettering and pin stripping by Glen Design and it was all back to us and ready to go in January.”

Gallen’s 2013 schedule will include seven of the nine Nitro Jam events including stops in San Antonio, Bradenton, West Palm Beach, Pittsburgh, Grand Bend, Martin and Memphis in addition to several stops with other series during the year. And Gallen admits that none of his accomplishments would be possible without a strong group of supporters helping get the “Poverty Stricken” Monza down the track.

“This season will mark our fifth year for our original block and heads. That is made possible only by the methodical attention of the crew and the lubricating capabilities of Red Line Oil,” Gallen said. “We also have to thank our incredible marketing partners including Ford 8 and 9 Inch Rears, Funny Farm Fabrication, Zac’s Hamburgers and new for this year Boninfante Friction.

“We also have to give a big thanks to the crew. Returning this season to defend our title will be John Benigni, Bob and Maria Rosetty, Jake and Clark Slater and an occasional guest appearance by Funny Car Steve.”

Founded in 2005 by Barb and Rich Young, To-A-Tee began as a custom print company handling contracts in and around the Indianapolis area. Within a few years the company had expanded to include national companies culminating with a venture into event, racer and track merchandising while further expanding its custom division a little over three years ago.
