After two tire rattling sessions Black Diamond Motorsports John Deflorian and Kevin Bealko qualified sixth and thirteenth in the third and last qualifying session of Extreme Pro Stock (XPS) for Friday at American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags VI Extreme Pro Stock presented by Mickey Thompson held at Summit Motorsports Park.

With one qualifying session left in the super-tight field that is already the second-quickest in XPS history with only .067 seconds separating the sixteen car field, Deflorian and Bealko look to improve their qualifying positions with the weather conditions predicted to be about the same as the third session .

Crew Chief Carl Trader looks to tune both Sonny’s Racing Engines in the Jerry Haas built 2012 Camaro and 2011 GXP with an elimination set-up but with the weather conditions predicted to be better than when Deflorian reset the ADRL record to 4.018 seconds elapsed time at 179.92 miles per hour you never know what can happen .

Admittedly, the past few ADRL events have not been Black Diamond Motorsports best outings. John Deflorian who has qualified number one at three events, reset the elasped time and mile per hour record and won the Summer Drags VIII in Martin, MI. has been met with a string of first or second round losses at the past couple events. With cooler weather returning and the end of the season approaching, John Deflorian and Kevin Bealko are hoping to turn their luck around at the ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags VI this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park.

With only one race remaining in the 2012 season following the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags VI presented by Mickey Thompson, the race for a world championship is coming down to a two car race but Black Diamond Motorsports is not conceding yet and plan on turning up the pressure.

The near perfect weather forecast for this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio has 3-second zone possibilities written all over it. Our Sonny Racing engines have been freshened, Carl Trader has calculated the possible tune-ups, the team is prepared to put both car in that zone .

The ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags VI presented by Mickey Thompson takes place on Sept. 28-29 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. It is the ninth race of the 2012 season in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL), and the ninth of 10 races on the 2012 ADRL Tour.

Patience and perseverance were the theme of the day at Summer Drags VIII at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich. Fridays first session of qualifying saw the Black Diamond Motorsports 2011 GXP driven by Kevin Bealko sitting in the number one position with a 4.072 seconds elapsed time (ET) at 175.45 miles per hour (MPH).

Six hours later after several rain showers in the second round of qualifying with the humidity at the extreme end of the gauge, Kevin aborted the run when the GXP headed for the wall but his previous qualifying run held up enough for third position as the rain returned again canceling the rest of qualifying. Saturday would be the final qualifying session in which the Black Diamond Motorsports crew hoped to improve in.

Saturday’s qualifying session did not see any improvement in the ET but no other competitor was able to improve their ET’s either allowing the GXP to remain in the third position and would have to face the Lone Mopar driven by Larry O’Brien in the first round of eliminations .

Kevin Bealko in his Sonny Racing powered Jerry Haas Race Cars 2011 GXP  performed his burn out and was lining up to stage when one of the Black Diamond Motorsports Crew noticed that a pressure gauge on the parachute bottle was reading zero from an air line that had broken on the burn out forcing Kevin to shut off the GXP for safety allowing O’Brien took make a single pass for the win.

All was for not as the Black Diamond Motosports 2012 Camaro driven by John Deflorian  was able to take up the gauntlet and win his first Extreme Pro Stock Title .

The seventh stop on the 10-race 2012 ADRL Tour takes place Aug. 3-4 at the state-of-the-art zMAX Dragway in Charlotte for ADRL Dragstock IX.

  • Bealko and Deflorian are Third and Fourth at ADRL Summer Drags VIII Martin, Mich

Black Diamond Motorsports driver’s Kevin Bealko and John Deflorian, Jr. end friday’s day of qualifying in third and fourth qualifying positions. With two separate rain delays that wiped away one total round of qualifying, patience was the key at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

The 2011 GXP driven by Kevin Bealko opened the first qualifying session with a 4.072 seconds elapsed time which placed him in the number one spot. In the second round of qualifying six hours later with the humidity at the extreme end of the gauge, Kevin aborted the run when the GXP headed for the wall but his previous qualifying run held up enough for third position for Saturday final qualifying session .

The 2012 Camaro driven by John Deflorian, Jr. opened the first qualifying session with a tire shaking 4.279 seconds elapsed time which placed him outside of the field. With the rain delays John waited patiently for his turn to qualify and parlayed it into a 4.088 seconds elapsed time placing him on the same side of the qualifying ladder with Kevin in the fourth position .

Saturday will hold the final qualifying session and eliminations for American Drag Racing League Summer Drags VIII held at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in which both drivers look to improve their qualifying positions and race to the finals.

PETERSBURG, VA. (June 22, 2012) – Sweltering heat and periodic rain showers left both Black Diamond Motorsports car not qualified after two sessions friday . The 2012 Camaro driven by John Deflorian, Jr. hopped skipped and jumped its way up the Virginia Motorsports Park surface trying to grab a hold of the surface but to no avail.

On his fast track learning curve, the GXP driven by Kevin Bealko in his competition debut with a five speed transmission carved his way to the ninth spot in the first qualifying session only to be bumped out in the second session after passing thunderstorms and curfew ended qualifying .

With one qualifying session left on saturday Black Diamond Motorsports hopes to seat both cars into the tough field .

Coming off a triennial of No. 1 qualifier awards St. Louis native John DeFlorian’s
storybook drag racing season continues to reach new heights. Deflorian put together
the quickest and fastest 1/8-mile run in Pro Stock history, running a 4.018 seconds

  • Sonny’s Racing Engines Returns As Sponsor Adds To Impressive Contingency List

Visible at nearly every American Drag Racing League (ADRL) event, Sonny Leonard and Sonny’s Racing Engines have enjoyed impressive results and a strong relationship with the ADRL.

That partnership will continue on the 2012 ADRL Tour, as the world’s premier eighth-mile drag racing league announced on Monday that Sonny’s Racing Engines will return as a sponsor for the 2012 season.

For Leonard, the longtime owner of the standout company, it’s a continued opportunity to work with many of the world’s top racers.

“I enjoy being out at the ADRL racer. There are a lot of good people out there; some of the best people I’ve ever met. These are people who are serious about their racing,” Leonard said.

“I look forward to working with the ADRL in 2012, and it’s a great way for me to give something back. I think the ADRL will have an even better year in 2012. There’s professional people running the ADRL and it seems like they will have an even better contingency program.”

Sonny’s Racing Engines will offer contingency in every professional class (Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Extreme 10.5, Pro Extreme Motorcycle, Extreme Pro Stock, Pro Modified and Top Sportsman) during the 2012 ADRL Tour, which begins on March 30-31 with CarSafe Dragpalooza VIII at Royal Purple Raceway in Houston.

Sonny’s will also award the No. 1 qualifier in Extreme Pro Stock if the driver uses one of Sonny’s popular engines.

It’s a top choice for many drivers, including the last two world champions in Extreme Pro Stock, Cary Goforth and John Montecalvo.

Other customers include Dean Goforth, Doug Kirk, Kevin Bealko, who used a Sonny’s Racing Engine to become the quickest automatic XPS call (4.11), and several others.

With the Extreme Pro Stock class continuing to make dramatic gains, Sonny’s Racing Engines will continue the “Sonny’s 3-Second Club,” which will honor the first five XPS drivers to reach the 3-second mark.

Cary Goforth re-set his world record with a 4.03 in 2011, and Leonard believes he will honor the first recipients in the “Sonny’s 3-Second Club” in 2012.

“There are a lot of people knocking on the door. Whoever does it first certainly deserves it,” Leonard said. “Like all the classes in the ADRL, it’s just so competitive and there’s so much talent. You have to be ready to race.”

Montecalvo and the Goforth family have been customers with Sonny’s for more than a decade, a sign of the company’s strong status in drag racing.

As Sonny’s Racing Engines, which is based out of Lynchburg, Va., continues to develop world-class racing engines and components, the company continues to become more involved with the ADRL.

With extensive development and tuning leading to more power for engines, a number of drivers in the new Top Sportsman and Pro Modified classes will work with the company in 2012.

“There’s a lot of good people and good customers in the ADRL, and it’s one of the best shows out there,” Leonard said.

Offering everything from racing engines to cylinder heads to manifolds and much more, and operating out of a state-of-the-art 11,000-square foot facility that features two SuperFlow dynamometers, a porting room and a welding shop, Sonny’s Racing Engine has the capability to work with drivers in all ADRL classes.

“The quality at Sonny’s Racing Engines is unmatched and the results speak for themselves,” ADRL Executive Vice President Jeff Fortune said. “We are thrilled to have them as a sponsor for the 2012 season and we can’t wait to get the first member of the ‘Sonny’s 3-Second Club.’”

JOHN DEFLORIAN TO RACE BLACK DIAMOND MOTORSPORTS 2012 CAMARO IN ADRL EXTREME PRO STOCK!

(07-13-11) Fenton, MO – Long acknowledged as one of the most popular drivers in drag racing competition, John DeFlorian is making the move to the highly competitive Extreme Pro Stock Eliminator in the American Drag Racing League.

After decades of remaining competitive in a variety of race cars despite often meager funding, DeFlorian has announced his association with one of the ADRL’s most innovative racing teams.

For the 2012 season, DeFlorian will campaign a radical new Extreme Pro Stock entry in conjunction with the Black Diamond Motorsports operation of current ADRL Extreme Pro Stock star Kevin Bealko.
