  • San Antonio hosts IHRA Nitro Jam’s best during San Antonio Nationals March 28-29

    '14RockyMountainNats

It is the single biggest IHRA drag racing event in the United States and this year, the San Antonio Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports at San Antonio Raceway are bigger than ever before.

After returning to the famed facility at SAR in 2011 following a two-year hiatus, the International Hot Rod Association’s Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series has enjoyed record growth with a newer, entertainment-based show. And in 2014 the IHRA will bring the best of both worlds to Texas with a perfect marriage of traditional championship drag racing and the newer, entertainment-first approach as the world’s best drivers compete in the second of 12 events on the 2014 Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series North American Tour during the San Antonio Nationals March 28-29 at San Antonio Raceway.

The IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series returns to San Antonio Raceway March 28-29

This year, every lap matters as the stars of Nitro Funny Car, Nitro Harley, Nitro Altered, Mountain Motor Pro Stock and Jet Dragster push their machines to the limit in their chase for the 2014 IHRA World Championships. Qualifying will take place Friday, March 28 followed by eliminations on Saturday, March 29, both under the lights and both with high stakes on the line.

“San Antonio has truly grown into one of the major high points of our season. The fan support there is unparalleled which is why we are so excited to bring the new look of the IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series to the fans,” said Scott Gardner, President of IHRA Motorsports. “The new Nitro Jam is a perfect blend of traditional drag racing and high speed, high horsepower entertainment and this year, we are bringing the best of the best in five amazing classes which should make this year’s event one of the biggest events yet.”

Highlighting the 2014 IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series is the Nitro Funny Car class, combining modern-world technology with classic body styles and old school, nostalgia drag racing. These machines regularly push 260 mph on the quarter-mile with fire bursting from the headers.

Texan John Hale (near) will try to keep his winning streak alive in his home state against the world’s best nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, including legends such as “Blue Max” (far)

This season, the Nitro Funny Car class will revolve around a quartet of talented drivers that have dominated the class over the past few years. Multi-time class champions from the NHRA Heritage Series and DRO series Jason Rupert in the “Black Plague” Camaro and John Hale in the “Mike Burkhart” tribute Camaro will lead the class into the 2014 season, joining IHRA regular Tim Boychuk and the crowd-favorite “Mr. Explosive” Mark Sanders.

Rupert enters the event having won the season opener in Tucson, Arizona over the weekend. Sanders finished second to the California native.

Other legendary names include the “Blue Max” driven by Ronnie Young, joining IHRA veterans Mike McIntire in the bright orange “McAttack” Camaro and Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “All-Star Dodge,” the legendary “Jungle Jim” Funny Car and Bruce Litton, stepping over from more than a decade of Top Fuel racing to pilot the “U.S. Male” Vega.

In addition to Nitro Funny Car, perhaps the most anticipated competition this season is the return of IHRA’s original class, Mountain Motor Pro Stock. Featuring 800 cubic inch power plants powering these factory hot rods more than 220 mph down the track, this season will mark the return of these powerful beasts to the traditional drag racing distance of a quarter-mile.

Pro Stock is back and San Antonio fans will see some of the best this weekend

Tucson race winner Cary Goforth and the Goforth Racing team, which swept the finals, will jointwo-time IHRA champion Pete Berner along with John Deflorian, Kevin Bealko, Brad Waddle, Scott Hintz and more.

Also making history at Tucson will be the debut of the world’s only Jet Dragster championship program being contested by the four fastest women in drag racing – the Larsen Motorsports jet team. This four-car team is made up of four very talented female competitors with vastly different backgrounds. From a 19-year-old college student, to a female test pilot and an entrepreneur who holds the operation together, the team of Elaine Larsen, Marisha Falk, Dawn Perdue and Kat Moller will compete in 300 mph, side-by-side jet-powered drag racing action.

IHRA’s other nitro divisions will include Nitro Harley and Nitro Altered, two radical and extreme classes that are among the most popular in the world for their death-defying competition.

Tucson winner Mike Scott and Nitro Harley legend Jay Turner, runner-up in Arizona, lead the class into the Texas event.

Nitro Altered, another extreme class once banned from organized competition due to the extreme danger behind the wheel, will include Arizona native Ron Maroney in “Blind Faith,” Las Vegas native and third generation racer Kyle Hough in “Nanook, the popular “Arizona Thunder” driven by Mike Hilsabeck, Randy Bradford’s “Bradford’s Fiat” and more.

In addition to all of the on-track action, the 2014 San Antonio Nationals will feature an all-new and fully interactive Fan Fest pit experience. Fans can tour the pits, meet the drivers and take part in a number of fun family activities including the Larsen Motorsports Jet Technology Center, a hands-on look at the design and technology behind a jet-powered racing team, and the Hollywood Cars of the Stars featuring real cars from famous movies and television shows.

Tickets to the 2014 San Antonio Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports are $20 on Friday and $30 on Saturday for adults and $10 for children. Adults can save $5 if they purchase their tickets in advance at www.nitrojam.com.

Showtime is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday for qualifying and 6 p.m. on Saturday for eliminations.

  • Top Funny Car teams ready to tangle in Texas

    image001 (1)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 1, 2013) – Let’s face it, the 2013 San Antonio Nitro Jam won’t be a race for the timid.

With many of the top teams from across the country gearing up for a wild ride down 1,320 feet of Texas asphalt, there is no room for “comfort” when the fastest machines in the land take to the strip. No, when the top teams tangle in Texas, it will be “all out” for five seconds of 300 mile-per-hour glory with the winner taking home one of the most coveted trophies of the year – an Ironman from the San Antonio Nitro Jam.

    image010 (3)

Greg Jacobsmeyer will make his 2013 debut in the ‘AllStar’ Dodge this weekend in San Antonio

Heralded as the biggest Nitro Jam in the United States, the sport’s top racers will be on hand for two days of nitro-powered racing action as drivers in Top Fuel, AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car, Fuel Altered and Nitro Harley battle it out alongside nearly half a dozen jet-powered machines, wheelstanders, fireworks and more at the 2013 San Antonio Nitro Jam presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports and CarSafe.

And headlining that list is a lineup of Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars that will leave fans talking.

Want the defending race winner, a Texas native with a wild Lone Star State theme coloring the side? How about Nitro Jam’s quickest and fastest machine, owning all of the records there is to set and two championships to boot? How about the fastest talker in the west, a man known better by a nickname than by his own name with a go-or-go-home personality straight from the glory days? Yes, the San Antonio Nitro Jam has it all.

“The entire ‘explosive’ team is ready to take on the best in the country and they are coming to San Antonio to finish some unfinished business,” said Mark Sanders, better known to the public as “Mr. Explosive.” “Don’t miss this one. Texans know how to party and we are ready for all of them in the winner’s circle to hang with us.”

     image011 (1)

Two-time defending IHRA World Champion Peter Gallen will also be making his 2013 debut this weekend

Leading the way into San Antonio is two-time defending Nitro Jam World Champion Peter Gallen. With a brand new design on the side of his record-setting 1978 Monza bodied “Poverty Stricken” Funny Car, Gallen is looking forward to his first race of the 2013 season as he tries to take home his first win at the San Antonio facility since winning the series’ first race back at the track in 2011.

“There is still more we want to do in this car,” Gallen said. “We are always pushing our car and our team harder, to be the best, and even with the success we have enjoyed over the last few years we aren’t backing down one bit. There are still mountains out there left to climb.

“The race in San Antonio is filled with heavy hitters and we didn’t get to show our stuff last year due to some problems with the car. We think we got those problems ironed out and we are ready to show our stuff in front of those great fans.”

While Gallen will certainly be the one to watch, the man who will hold the most support from the crowd is defending race winner and Texas native John Hale. Hale’s “Nitro Boss” Mustang Funny Car features a unique design with a skull, Texas flag and the phrase “don’t mess with Texas” spilling across the back. And as the 2012 winner of this very race, you can be certain Texas fans will once again be pulling for the “Boss.”

    image012 (1)

2012 race winner and Texas native John Hale will return to defend his title in ‘Nitro Boss’

“Everyone on the team is excited about having a Nitro Jam in our great state of Texas. I have raced with many of these cars before and I am looking forward to competing against them. They are all a great bunch of racers.

“Nitro Jam really puts on a great show for the fans and we look forward to being a part of it once again.”

Perhaps the hottest driver at the end of 2012 is multi-time race winner Greg Jacobsmeyer in the “AllStar” Dodge Challenger. Jacobsmeyer won two of the final three races of the 2012 season, both coming against eventual series champion Peter Gallen giving Jacobsmeyer and his crew plenty of bragging rights in the offseason. Since then the “AllStar” team has been busy focusing on lower times and faster speeds hoping to make an even bigger splash in 2013, beginning in San Antonio.

“The new motor, clutch and injection system met every expectation last year, but there is always room for improvement,” Jacobsmeyer said. “To extract every ounce of performance requires mastery of many variables and is best done with reliable data collection and analysis to inform tuning and adjustment decisions. New sensors, data recording and analysis capability are in store for this season to ensure that is possible.

“Couple that with advice from experts in the sport and we predict even quicker speeds and ETs are in store for the ‘AllStar’ Dodge Challenger.”

    image013 (1)

With one huge final already under his belt, ‘Mr. Explosive’ Mark Sanders will look to make a statement in Texas

Mark Sanders presents the biggest wildcard of the bunch as “Mr. Explosive” returns to Nitro Jam action for the first time in almost two years. After a bad crash in March of 2012 put the “Mr. Explosive” machine out of commission for the year, Sanders returned in a big way in 2013 with a brand new 1970 Mustang that he took to the final round of the biggest nostalgia Funny Car race of the season at the March Meet. With a new car and a proven winner, Sanders looks forward to matching blows with the best-of-the-best.

“We are back in a big way. We had a bad crash in 2012, but we have put that behind us. My son Jake built a brand new, tough as nails nitro-breathing Funny Car and boy does that thing fly,” Sanders said.

The nitro foursome will clash Friday and Saturday night the weekend of April 5-6. Pairs will be drawn at random each night, with the round one winners returning for the final later in the night. First round losers will square off in the consolation round.

Don’t miss the San Antonio Nitro Jam April 5-6 at San Antonio Raceway!

  • Biggest names in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car battle at Tucson’s Arizona Nitro Jam

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 13, 2013) – In the world of nostalgia nitro racing there are a prestigious few events that boast having the biggest names and the best cars in the sport.

Tucson’s Arizona Nitro Jam presented by Good Vibrations and CarSafe is quickly becoming one of those events.

    image008 (1)

Texas native John Hale will try to keep his undefeated Nitro Jam streak alive

For the third year in a row the fastest names in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car will do battle on the Tucson quarter-mile as two-time defending NHRA Heritage Series champion Jason Rupert in the brand new “Bays & Rupert” ’69 Camaro will do battle against three of the most competitive teams in the sport in the AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car “Clash of the Titans” at Southwestern International Raceway.

Fresh off of setting the quickest and fastest lap at the famed March Meet earlier this month, California native Jason Rupert will battle two of the next four fastest cars from that same event in addition to going up against the two-time defending winner of the Tucson event.

Rupert will put it all on the line against Steven Denham, son of legendary racer Gary Densham, behind the wheel of the “Teachers Pet” ’69 Camaro and Texas native John Hale in the “Nitro Boss” ’69 Camaro. Densham qualified third and Hale fifth at the most famous nostalgia nitro race in the world earlier this month behind Rupert’s chart topping pass of 5.702 seconds at 254.47 mph. Rounding out the field of the quickest and fastest in the world is California native Mike Halstead who steps in behind the wheel of the famed “Candies & Hughes” ’70 Barracuda, the same car that drove to an Ironman trophy two years in a row at the Arizona Nitro Jam.

    image009 (1)

March Meet top qualifier and two-time NHRA Heritage Series champion Jason Rupert will try to claim his first Nitro Jam Ironman

“The best cars in the nation will be in Tucson and it will certainly be tough,” Rupert said. “Densham’s car runs hard everywhere, Hale’s car is always tough and of course the ‘Candies & Hughes’ car goes down the track every time which makes it hard to beat. It will be a great competition and an outstanding show for the fans.”

This prestigious invite-only Funny Car battle is sure to be the most competitive yet as all four drivers are no strangers to winning. The “Candies & Hughes” Funny Car, driven last year by veteran Mike Savage, visited five final rounds with three wins including a Saturday night win in Tucson. Rupert and Densham have not won in IHRA Nitro Jam competition, but have won numerous events in other national circuits. Hale has one win in two Nitro Jam starts.

“I live, eat, sleep and breathe Nitro Funny Cars. I like the people involved, I like the sights, the sounds, the traveling – I like it all,” Hale said. “At the March Meet it was not the outcome I had envisioned, but we had a great weekend with family and friends. Now we are setting our focus on Tucson which should be a great event. It is a great group of guys we are going up against and we look forward to the challenge.”

The season-opening March Meet at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California proved a good litmus test as to the competition expected in Tucson. Rupert topped the 34 drivers trying to qualify for the 16-car field with a very quick 5.702, 254.47. Densham was third with a 5.757, 247.38 and Hale was fifth with a 5.823, 245.49. Rupert also set the fastest lap in the country last season.

The all-star AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny group will also include Steven Densham

Halstead and the “Candies & Hughes” team will make their season debut at the Tucson event.

The 2013 Arizona Nitro Jam presented by Good Vibrations and CarSafe is Saturday, March 23 beginning at 7 p.m. The all-star AMSOIL Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car field will be joined by additional nitro classes including Fuel Altered and the return of Top Fuel Dragster as the 8,000 horsepower, 320 mph machine driven by Bruce Litton battles a jet dragster for the very first time. Fireworks, the 30,000 horsepower Super Shockwave jet truck, the Candyland wheelstander and more will highlight the one-night-only show.
